2021–2022 veteran status verification

Financial Aid and Scholarship Services will request this documentation only if it is needed to complete your financial aid file. This item holds the disbursement of financial aid if it is listed on your My Tasks on My ASU.

You can view your document status on your My ASU under the Finances tab. Please allow 2-3 business days to show receipt in your My ASU Financing Tasks.

Documentation of your veteran status

The Department of Veterans Affairs did not confirm that you are or will be a qualifying veteran for federal student aid purposes. Therefore, you must provide documentation of your veteran status.

Definition of a veteran for federal student aid purposes

1. You have engaged in active duty (including basic training) in the U.S. Armed Forces (the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard) AND were released under a condition other than "dishonorable".
2. You are a National Guard or Reserves enlistee who was called to active federal duty by presidential order for a purpose other than training AND were released under a condition other than "dishonorable". Note: if you were on active duty for training only, you are NOT considered a veteran for federal student aid purposes.
3. You attended a U.S. service academy or preparatory school (listed below) for at least one day AND were released under a condition other than "dishonorable". Note: if you are serving in ROTC or currently attending a U.S. military academy, you are NOT a veteran for federal student aid purposes.

U.S. Military Academy (West Point), U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, Naval Academy Preparatory School, or U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School.

Acceptable documentation

1. A copy of your DD214 (Member 4 Copy) with a character of service as anything but "dishonorable".
2. If you are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, you may submit a signed and dated letter from your commanding officer that states: (a) your department, component, and branch (b) that you are on active duty, and (c) your upcoming release date.
3. If you are currently serving on active federal duty in the National Guard or Reserves, you may submit a signed and dated letter from your commanding officer that states: (a) your department, component, and branch (b) that you are on active federal duty by presidential order for a purpose other than training, and (c) your upcoming release date.
4. If you attended a U.S. service academy or preparatory school and were released under conditions other than "dishonorable" prior to commission, you may submit documentation that shows you were a cadet of a military academy or its preparatory school.

Do not submit the Veteran Status Verification eForm. Instead, go back to your 2021-2022 FAFSA and make a correction by changing your response to FAFSA question 49: Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces? to "no". This question is located under the Dependency Status tab on the FAFSA on the web.

If you are unable to answer yes to any of the other FAFSA dependency questions, you will need to provide parent information and parent signature.

The FAFSA correction will take 3-5 days to process and be sent to ASU. Please monitor My ASU for updates.
