2022–2023 Veteran status verification

If this item is listed under your Financing Tasks in My ASU, your financial aid disbursement will be placed on hold until you provide the information requested.

Why this is needed

The Department of Veterans Affairs did not confirm that you are or will be a qualifying veteran for federal student aid purposes. Therefore, you must provide documentation of your veteran status.

Definition of a veteran for federal student aid purposes

1. You have engaged in active duty (including basic training) in the U.S. Armed Forces (the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard) and were released under a condition other than "dishonorable."
2. You are a National Guard or Reserves enlistee who was called to active federal duty by presidential order [as defined in Law 10 USC 12302] for a purpose other than training and were released under a condition other than "dishonorable." Note: If you were on active duty for training only, you are not considered a veteran for federal student aid purposes. Your orders must include that you were called to active duty by presidential order.
3. You attended a U.S. service academy or preparatory school included in the list below for at least one day and were released under a condition other than "dishonorable":
   • U.S. Military Academy (West Point)
   • U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis),
   • U.S. Air Force Academy,
   • U.S. Coast Guard Academy,
   • U.S. Merchant Marine Academy,
   • U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School,
   • Naval Academy Preparatory School, or
   • U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School.
   Note: If you are serving in ROTC or currently attending a U.S. military academy, you are not a veteran for federal student aid purposes.

Acceptable documentation

1. A copy of your DD214 (Member 4 copy) with a character of service indicated as anything other than "dishonorable."
2. If you are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, you may submit a signed and dated letter from your commanding officer that states: (a) your department, component and branch, (b) that you are on active duty, and (c) your upcoming release date.
3. If you are currently serving on active federal duty in the National Guard or Reserves, you may submit a signed and dated letter from your commanding officer that states: (a) your department, component and branch, (b) that you are on active federal duty by presidential order as defined in [Law 10 USC 12302] for a purpose other than training, and (c) your upcoming release date.
4. If you attended any of the U.S. service academies or preparatory schools listed above and were released under conditions other than "dishonorable" prior to commission, you may submit documentation that shows you were a cadet of a military academy or its preparatory school.

Do not submit the Veteran status verification eForm. Instead, go back to your 2022–2023 FAFSA and make a correction by changing your response to: Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces? to "no".

This question is located on the third tab, Dependency Status under the Student Additional Dependency Questions on the online FAFSA. If you are unable to answer yes to any of the other FAFSA dependency questions, you will need to provide parent information and parent signature.

The FAFSA correction will take three to five days to process and be sent to ASU. Please monitor My ASU for updates.
