Yes. Certain applications do require a resume, coversheet, and/or the submission of additional documents. For those applications, you will need to review the scholarship criteria and submit all of the requested documents in the ASU Scholarship Application Portal by the published deadline. You will not receive any reminders to complete these steps and incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Yes, that could happen because the elementary classroom is not considered a “high-need field”. However, a special education elementary classroom is considered an area of high need. It will be your responsibility to choose a position that meets the service agreement requirements.
No, you must be a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.
Generally a middle school math or science teacher is considered an area of high need. The U.S. Department of Education guidelines states: 'The TEACH Grant Program provides up to $4,000 a year in grant assistance to a student who agrees to serve for at least four years as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.' Please note: The TEACH Grant maximum award amount is impacted by sequestration each academic year. This can result in an increase or decrease in the TEACH Grant amount you will receive due to the scheduled percentage reduction determined by the Budget Control Act of 2011.
For freshmen, paying the enrollment deposit automatically accepts a university merit scholarship. Continuing students need to accept all scholarships and can be done through My ASU.
When a student applies to the university, their high school academic record is reviewed and based upon G.P.A., test scores, and class ranking he/she may be offered a scholarship.
An ASUrite user ID and password are required for you to sign into the ASU Scholarship Portal. Please note there are two places you can search: ASU scholarship portal and college listings.
You apply for the TEACH Grant by completing a FAFSA. ASU will select students who are in the appropriate majors and offer them the TEACH Grant. Students will be required to accept the grant and complete entrance counseling as well as an Agreement to Serve.
Unless specifically stated otherwise, responses to each question are required for successful submission. Upon submission of your application, you should see one of two messages: If you successfully completed all required responses, you will see a message stating, "Your application was successfully submitted/saved." You will be routed to the ASU Scholarship Application Portal where you can edit your applications or search for additional scholarships. If you did not complete a required response, you will see an error message indicating which responses are missing, and the application will reload to highlight missing fields. Remember that certain scholarships may require the submission of additional materials such as a letter of recommendation or a cover sheet. You must submit the supplemental materials in the portal by no later than the deadline listed on the scholarship (most are February 1 each year) for your application to be considered complete. You will not receive any reminders to complete these steps and incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
If the scholarship that you are applying for requires letters of recommendation, you will be able to enter the names and email addresses of the individuals you would like to submit a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Your reference will receive an email notification directing them to the page to submit their recommendation. You can view the status of your letter of recommendation requests for each academic year’s application by visiting your ASU Scholarship Portal and clicking on the "Recommendation requests" tab. You will have an option to send your recommender a reminder after two weeks.
Cumulative ASU GPA represents all of the grades you received while attending ASU. Scholarships are considered for renewal after the spring grades have been posted.

You must teach at least four years as a full-time teacher within an eight year period of time.
Neither, if you were awarded a TEACH Grant because your GPA is 3.25, you must maintain the 3.25 or increase the GPA in future terms to remain eligible for any additional TEACH Grant awards. If your GPA goes below 3.25, any old awards will remain as grants until you finish the program (or withdraw from school or notify the government that you do not intend to teach). Once graduated or withdrawn, the service requirement begins and the U.S. Dept. of Education will monitor your progress. You must provide them with documents showing that you are fulfilling your agreement to serve on an annual basis.
No, only university eligible students receiving the Regents High Honors Endorsement (RHHE) scholarship may transfer their RHHE award to ASU under certain conditions. TEACH Grant is a nationwide program; you may perform your service obligation in any state. You must be a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a public or private elementary or secondary school that serves students from low-income families.
If you do not meet the requirements of your service obligation, all TEACH Grants you received will be converted to Federal Direct Unsubsidized loans. You must repay these loans in full, with interest charged from the date of each TEACH Grant disbursement. Elementary and secondary schools (public and private) and educational service agencies serving low-income students are listed in the annual Teacher Cancellation Low-Income Directory. In addition, elementary or secondary schools operated by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Indian Education (BIE) or operated on Indian reservations by Indian tribal groups under contract or grant with the BIE qualify as low-income schools. If you have questions about your TEACH Grant converting to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized loan or about meeting TEACH Grant requirements contact the TEACH Grant servicer, FedLoan Servicing, at 1-800-699-2908 from 8 a.m.–9 p.m. Eastern time, Monday through Friday.
The ASU Scholarship Application Portal collects your applications for several different scholarships, and saves your responses to common questions so that you don’t need to complete the information twice. There is no single application that you can complete; rather, you must choose which scholarships you wish to apply for and complete an application for each one. You can find a list of scholarships that have portal applications on our scholarship search.
Each year that you receive a TEACH Grant, you must sign an Agreement to Serve or Repay and TEACH Grant Counseling on the U.S Department of Education TEACH Grant website. The TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve or Repay and TEACH Grant Counseling explains the terms and conditions of the service obligation you must agree to fulfill as a condition for receiving a TEACH Grant. By signing the Agreement to Serve or Repay and completing Counseling, you agree to these terms and conditions and acknowledge your understanding that if you do not fulfill the service obligation, the TEACH Grant funds you received will be converted to a loan that you must repay.

<p>When a student is ready to return to school after a deferment, he/she must submit a scholarship reinstatement request notifying the scholarship office that they will be returning to school. Completed requests must be submitted by no later than 30 days prior to the semester you are approved to return. In the case of an internship or mission deferment, the student must also submit proof of completion. If the student is returning from a medical deferment a note from the treating physician is needed. If the student is a National Merit Scholar they must also contact the National Merit Corporation. The reinstatement request and eligibility criteria can be found online at scholarships.asu.edu and is listed with online forms and publications.</p>

The FAFSA must be received, along with the Agreement to Serve and entrance counseling, before the last day of class of the fall semester (for students not attending the following spring semester), before the last day of class of the spring semester (for students not attending the following summer semester), or before the last day of summer (for students attending summer).

Complete the TEACH Grant Entrance Counseling and Agreement to Serve on the TEACH Grant page on StudentLoans.gov.
Many of the scholarship application deadlines are in February and March each year; however, it is important that you review deadlines carefully as they do vary. Scholarship awards are very competitive and if you are selected, you will be notified by the awarding office noted in the scholarship listing. We ask that you please not contact the awarding office regarding the status of the review or to see if you have been selected as a scholarship recipient. Scholarship recipients are typically notified of selection in April and May.

Three scenarios may occur: If you are enrolled in summer classes and have worked under the Federal Work-Study program for the preceding fall or spring semesters, you will automatically receive a summer Federal Work-Study estimate award. Once we receive a summer continuation of your job assignment or new hire form from your employer, we will change it to an actual summer Federal Work-Study award. If you are enrolled in summer classes, and you did not work under the Federal Work-Study program during the preceding fall or spring semesters, you can request for Federal Work-Study eligibility. Once we receive information about your summer job assignment from your employer, we will post an actual summer Federal Work-Study award. If you are not enrolled in the summer semester, but you wish to work under for a summer Federal Work-Study job, you must have the following: A completed FAFSA for the current and upcoming academic years on file with ASU. Be eligible for need-based financial aid for both academic years. The Federal Work-Study earnings during this time of non-enrollment will be considered as a resource for the next enrollment period, which will have an effect on your financial aid eligibility for the next academic year.
Accept your awards on My ASU under Finances. Remember, summer financial aid is at the end of the current academic year.
There is no separate summer aid application. Students who enroll for the summer and have a FAFSA on file for the aid year preceding the summer semester will be automatically considered.

Starting with the 2024–2025 FAFSA, a new term called “Contributor” has been introduced. A Contributor is someone who is required to provide information on a student’s FAFSA form. This can include:
- The student.
- The student’s biological or adopted parents.
- The student’s spouse.
- The parent’s spouse.
It’s important to note that a Contributor does not include:
- A grandparent.
- Foster parents.
- Legal guardians.
- Brother or sister.
- Aunt or uncle.
Even if individuals from the above list helped provide for or raise the student, they are not considered Contributors for the FAFSA form.
It’s crucial to understand that having someone listed as a Contributor on the FAFSA form does not imply financial responsibility for the student’s education cost.
You may use your financial aid towards your costs for study abroad. You can submit a cost sheet to the Financial Aid Office provided to you by the Center of Global Education Services to increase your summer costs of attendance. You will only be considered for any additional Federal Stafford Loans, Parent PLUS Loans and/or Private Education Loans.
If you have not received your entire TEACH Grant eligibility for the fall/spring semesters ($4,000 per academic year) and based on your enrolled credit hours for the summer semester, you may receive some or all of your remaining TEACH Grant eligibility.
Information Services for the Tuition and Fees Deduction and the Education Credits ASU cannot provide personal tax advice to students as each student's tax situation depends upon his/her own individual circumstances. Each student and/or their parents must determine eligibility for the tuition and fees deduction or one of the education credits (American Opportunity or lifetime learning credit). For authoritative information, we recommend that you visit the IRS web site at: www.irs.gov/formspubs/ You can contact the IRS for telephone assistance, including requesting forms and publications, at 1-800-829-1040. At the IRS web site you can review: IRS Publication 970 "Tax Benefits for Higher Education", which includes chapters on the Hope credit, the lifetime learning credit, and the tuition and fees deduction. Form 8863 "Education Credits (American Opportunity, Hope and Lifetime Learning Credits)". Instructions for Form 1040 or 1040A. IRS Publication 17 "Tax Guide for Individuals". The tax rules regarding eligibility for, calculation of, and limitations on the tuition and fee deduction and education credits can be complex. For this reason, you may want to consult your tax advisor to determine whether you are qualified to claim the education expense tax credits and deduction.
You can view your current or prior 1098-T forms online at any time. You can view all 1098-T tax forms by logging in to My ASU,selecting the "Finances" tab at the top of the page and selecting the "IRS 1098 T" option. On the next screen, select the year you would like to view by clicking the links available.
Information for Nonresident Aliens The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) does not require ASU to file a Form 1098-T for foreign students who are not US residents for tax purposes. This is because non-resident alien students are not eligible for education tax benefits. However, ASU cannot definitively determine which foreign students are residents for tax purposes. Also, the IRS does require ASU to provide a 1098-T to a non-resident alien student who requests one. For these reasons we provide 1098-T forms to all students, including foreign students who may or may not be eligible for an education tax benefit.
Please reference the Explanation of IRS Form 1098-T and Form 1098-T Supplemental Information for more information.
The IRS Form 1098-T is an information form filed with the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS Form 1098-T that you received reports amounts paid to you for qualified tuition and related expenses, as well as other related information. You, or the person who may claim you as a dependent, may be able to take either the tuition and fees deduction or claim an education credit on Form 1040 or 1040A for the qualified tuition and related expenses that were actually paid during the calendar year. The Form 1098-T Supplemental Information that ASU is providing over the Internet can assist you and your tax preparer in completing your tax return. Follow the instructions provided on the Form 1098-T Supplemental Information page to view and print paid tuition information. There is no need to attach Form 1098-T to your tax return. All information and assistance that ASU can provide to you is contained in this notice. There is no IRS requirement that you must claim the tuition and fees deduction or an education credit. Claiming education tax benefits is a voluntary decision for those who may qualify
Box 1 of Form 1098-T reports the qualified tuition and related expenses paid during the calendar year. Qualified tuition and related expenses are sometimes referred to as qualified education expenses, although the terms are not always interchangeable. For purposes of the Form 1098-T provided by Arizona State University, the following categories of charges are included or not included in qualified tuition and related expenses: Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses Included Not Included Resident and Non-resident Tuition Graduate and Undergraduate Program Tuition Graduate and Undergraduate Differential Tuition Resident Surcharge Special Class Fees icourse & ocourse Fees Recreation Fee Financial Aid Trust Fund Fee Associated Students of Arizona Fee Student Programs Fee Technology Fee Health and Wellness Fee Student Service Facility Fee Late Charges Application Fees Processing Fees Health Insurance Premiums ASU Payment Plan Fee Room and Board Charges Course Related Books & Equipment Registration fees paid for non-credit courses Effective Reporting Changes for 2018 Due to tax reporting requirements effective for calendar year 2018, ASU will now report all payments for qualified tuition and related expenses in Box 1. Please note this is different from prior years where only "billed" information for qualified tuition and related expenses was reported in Box 2. ASU will continue to provide students with additional information of their paid information through the Form 1098-T Supplemental Information page of this web site.
If you did not receive an IRS Form 1098-T for the current calendar year, possible explanations are: Arizona State University did not have a valid social security number on file for you. Call (480) 965-9834 to verify your social security number. Arizona State University did not identify any information to report. This would include having zero amounts for payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses, scholarship awards, adjustments to scholarship awards and adjustments for a prior year. See Explanation of IRS Form 1098-T Tuition Statement for more information regarding how paid tuition and related fees were determined. ASU did not have a current mailing address for you. Please ensure that your address information is up to date through My ASU. You can view your current or prior 1098-T forms online at any time by logging in to My ASU, selecting the "Finances" tab at the top of the page and selecting the "IRS 1098 T" option. On the next screen, select the year you would like to view by clicking on the link available.

If you do not see a "Third-Party Sponsored Credit" applied to the corresponding semester charges on your student account within 5 business days of submitting your Third Party Sponsor Documents, please contact ASU via email at sponsorbilling@asu.edu.
Make eCheck payments on QuikPAY by logging in to MyASU and selecting the 'Finances' link on the upper left side, then selecting 'Pay Bill.' You can submit payment up to the amount owed on your account. To make an eCheck payment you will need your bank's routing number, sometimes referred to as the Transit Number or the ABA number, and your bank account number. This information is available on the bottom of your check or from your financial institution. An example of where to find this information on a check is also available online when an eCheck payment is made. A paper check is not required.

Attn: Third-Party Sponsor Billing
To arrange for ASU to bill your approved governmental/third-party sponsor, please submit a Financial Guarantee Letter to the Student Accounts Office by the deadline on the Tuition and Billing Calendar. ASU will only bill the Third Party Billing fee to the Sponsor if indicated on the Financial Guarantee Letter. Within 5 business days of receipt of the Financial Guarantee Letter, ASU will place a "Third-Party Sponsor Credit" on your student account for the amount indicated on your Financial Guarantee Letter. The "Third-Party Sponsor Credit" on your student account indicates that we have received your sponsorship documentation and that we will be issuing an invoice to your sponsoring agency during the semester. It does not indicate that payment has been received from your sponsoring agency. If the third-party sponsoring agency remits full payment as indicated on the ASU invoice, no further action is required from the student. If full payment is not received from the sponsor, or if further information is needed, ASU will contact the student via their ASU e-mail.
The service fee was determined by our vendor. The University is not directly accepting credit or debit card payments for Tuition and Student Account payments; they are being accepted by our vendor who is assessing the 2.5% service fee for the processing of the credit card payment. The service fee is not paid to ASU and is not refundable, even if the related payment to ASU is refunded.
All military students wishing to use benefits should first contact ASU Veterans Services to become familiar with the policies and procedures in using military benefits. Students using TA Benefits can submit their TA forms by using any of the following methods: Preferred Method: Email: sponsorbilling@asu.edu Other Methods to Submit: Fax: 480.965.9242 In Person: Student Accounts office (Tempe, West, Downtown or Polytechnic Locations) By Mail: Arizona State University Student Accounts Office Attn: Third-Party Sponsor Billing PO Box 870303 Tempe, AZ 85287-0303
Yes, students can you both benefits simultaneously. Veteran Services always encourages students with both benefits to consult with the VA Campus Counselor to ensure they are maximizing their military benefits.
Any Tuition Assistance received will be applied to a student's account first and Post 9/11 GI Benefits will be applied after. For example, if student with 80% eligibility has tuition and fees totaling $5,500 and receives $1,500 in Tuition Assistance, the Chapter 33 benefit will then pay 80% of the remaining $4,000 balance ($3,200) leaving a balance to be paid by the student of $800.
Yes. If you voluntarily enroll and charges are paid before the initial designated payment deadline, you will still be assessed the nonrefundable enrollment plan fee.
When ASU is notified by our bank of the rejected eCheck payment, usually seven to ten days after payment was made, a charge will be posted to your account for the full amount of the rejected payment. An electronic notification will be sent, and a $25 returned eCheck fee will be charged to your student account. See Returned Check Policy for additional information. Once the charges appear on your student account, a payment can be made in person at any campus Cashiering Office or online through MyASU. Select the "Finances" on the upper left side, then select "Pay Bill" to make payment online. Please follow up with your financial institution to determine what the error might be regarding the routing or account numbers you provided. A rejected eCheck does not necessarily mean that funds were not sufficient to cover the payment.
If payment is not received from the sponsoring agency, ASU will notify you (via your ASU e-mail) that payment has not been received from your Sponsor and ask that you contact your sponsoring agency to arrange payment immediately. If payment is not received within two weeks from the due date of the invoice, any unpaid charges will be placed back on your student account, and payment will be due immediately. Students with accounts that become delinquent are subject to monthly late fees and will be blocked from University services, including registration, transcripts, and diplomas. Please see Delinquent Accounts and Late Charges for more information. Note: Students may receive periodic e-mails to their primary ASU e-mail address regarding the status of their account and instructions on how to resolve any specific issues related to their third-party sponsorship. It is the responsibility of the student to monitor their ASU e-mail account and to respond to official ASU e-mails as indicated.
Your bank balance is not accessed at the time an eCheck payment is made. You are responsible for ensuring that adequate funds are available in your checking or savings account. Your eCheck payment will be accepted online and processed to your bank as described in the "When will my bank account be charged" question. If funds are not available for the eCheck payment, or the account is invalid or closed, you will be notified by email one to three days after the original payment was made. When ASU is notified by our bank of the rejected eCheck payment, usually seven to ten days after payment was made, a charge will be posted to your account for the full amount of the rejected payment. An electronic notification will be sent to the address on file with ASU and a $25 returned eCheck fee will be charged on your student account. See Returned Check Policy for additional information.
The 2.5% service fee is nonrefundable. Nelnet assessed the service fee for the processing of the original credit card transaction and therefore it is nonrefundable, even if the related payment to ASU is refunded.
eChecks are ASU's preferred payment method and are accepted with no service fee or additional cost to the student. eCheck is a fast and simple payment method. Similar to a debit or check card, the eCheck electronically debits a checking or savings account.
The Third-Party Billing Fee is a non-refundable per semester administrative fee to cover the costs associated with processing the sponsorship paperwork, preparing invoices and billing the third-party agency on behalf of the student. ASU will bill this fee to the sponsor agency only if indicated on the Financial Guarantee Letter. Please remember to include this fee when requesting the Financial Guarantee Letter from your Sponsor. Students will be responsible for paying the Third-Party Billing Fee if not paid by their Sponsor.
eChecks are accepted online for payment of tuition, housing, and other student account charges. Login to MyASU and select the Finances tab at the top of the page, then click 'Pay Bill' to be transferred to QuikPAY to pay your ASU charges. In QuikPAY select "Pay Bill" from the menu on the left-hand side to securely process your payment.
Visit the Tuition and Billing Calendar for Third Party Sponsor Document submission deadlines to avoid automatic enrollment in the ASU Payment Plan and/or Late Fees.
Your bank account will be charged overnight for payments made prior to 3:00 PM Arizona time and the next night for payments made after 3:00 PM Arizona time. eCheck payments made on weekends or holidays will be processed on the next business day.
ASU does not directly accept credit and debit cards for payment of tuition and Student Account charges, but has arranged for a third-party vendor to accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express when payment is made online. The third-party vendor, Nelnet assesses a 2.5% service fee for processing the transaction. The service fee is not paid to ASU and is not refundable, even if the related payment to ASU is refunded.
ASU made the decision several years ago to stop accepting credit card payments for tuition and other student account charges after careful consideration because of the significant and rising cost to the University of credit card processing fees. The cost of accepting credit cards was paid out of tuition and other University revenues, reducing revenue available for campus services to all students, regardless of whether or not they used a credit card to make payments. The savings realized by ASU because of this change helps fund, for example, library acquisitions, more faculty, classroom upgrades, and other student enhancements. The University has made arrangements for a third-party vendor to accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express when payment is made online. The third-party vendor, Nelnet assesses a 2.5% service fee for processing the transaction. The service fee is not paid to ASU and is not refundable, even if the related payment to ASU is refunded.
Students who may be considering reducing their credit hours are advised to consult with Student Business Services to ensure they fully understand the financial implications of the reduction. Per Federal Regulations, the TA program must follow the same guidelines as Department of Education Title IV funding and therefore based on the student’s last day of attendance, TA eligibility and funding may be affected by a reduction in credit hours. Unearned TA funding up to 65% for the period enrolled may reduce the student’s military benefit. If reduction in hours is due to a military service obligation, submitting a military activation form may be the course of action to take. It can be found at https://veterans.asu.edu/forms .
You will receive two emails after a credit card payment is made. One email confirms the actual amount paid to ASU and applied to your ASU charges. The second email confirms the 2.5% service fee assessed and charged to your credit card by Nelnet.
Yes. Students who meet the requirements of Prop. 308 are eligible for in-state tuition for any semester that starts after Dec. 13, 2022. Prop. 308 does not have a retroactive effect, so students will not be reclassified for semesters that began prior to Dec. 13, 2022.
No. A qualifying noncitizen student will pay in-state tuition if they meet the requirements of
A.R.S. § 15-1803(B):
- The student attended any public or private high school or homeschool equivalent while physically present in Arizona for at least two years; and
- The student graduated from any public or private high school or homeschool equivalent in Arizona or obtained a high school equivalency diploma in Arizona, i.e., a GED.
Do the two years of physical presence in Arizona while attending high school need to be consecutive?
No. Students do not need to have two years of consecutive presence. However, to be eligible,
they still must provide documentation that they both:
- Attended any public or private high school option or homeschool equivalent while physically present in Arizona for at least two years; and
- Graduated from a public or private high school option or homeschool equivalent or obtained a high school equivalency diploma in Arizona.
Prop. 308 repealed an Arizona law (A.R.S. § 15-1825) that prohibited students who were not citizens of the United States and who were “without lawful immigration status” from receiving financial assistance subsidized or paid in whole, or in part, with state monies, such as tuition waivers, fee waivers, grants, scholarships, and any other type of financial aid or assistance.
With the passage of Prop. 308, all students – regardless of immigration status – may be eligible to receive financial aid paid in whole or in part with state monies to attend an Arizona public university or an Arizona community college. While Prop. 308 eliminated barriers to eligibility for financial aid based on immigration status, a student must still meet all other requirements of the state financial aid they are seeking.
To be eligible for state financial aid, a student does NOT need to meet the Arizona high school attendance or graduation criteria. That applies only to eligibility for in-state tuition.
Prop. 308 does not impact the eligibility requirements to receive federal financial aid.
Any student who wants to apply for financial aid and who can complete the FAFSA, should complete the FAFSA. However, a student must have a Social Security number to complete a FAFSA application and some of the students who are impacted by Prop. 308 may not be eligible to complete the FAFSA. Students can visit ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10009.pdffor more information on how to obtain an SSN.
Prop. 308 made two significant changes to Arizona law.
First, with the passage of Prop. 308, a qualifying non-citizen student, with statutorily defined exceptions, is eligible for in-state resident tuition at state universities and community colleges if the student both:
- Attended an Arizona public or private high school, or homeschool for a minimum of two years; and
- Graduated from an Arizona public or private high school, or homeschool equivalent, or obtained an Arizona high school equivalency diploma, e.g., a general equivalency diploma (GED).
Second, Prop. 308 repealed A.R.S. § 15-1825, and now non-citizen students are eligible to receive financial aid funded in whole, or in part, with state monies, regardless of immigration status.
ASU offers a number of financial aid opportunities, including merit scholarships and need-based aid. Students who meet the requirements of ASU scholarships and financial aid programs are now eligible to receive them, regardless of immigration status. For additional information, visit the New American University scholarship page or use the first-year merit scholarship estimator.
Please contact a team member at residency@asu.edu about your ability to qualify for in-state tuition under Prop. 308.
No. To qualify for the Arizona Promise Program, a student must meet all the eligibility requirements under A.R.S. § 15-1701. One requirement of the Promise Program is that a student must qualify for a Pell Grant, which is federal need-based financial aid. Aliens without legal immigration status, who are not citizens or legal permanent residents, do not qualify for federal financial aid. More information about the Arizona Promise Program, including eligibility requirements, is available at: azregents.edu/arizona-promise-program.
Students impacted by Prop. 308 may be eligible for other state or college financial aid , in addition to private scholarships.
Prop. 308 became effective Dec. 5, 2022, after the election results were certified, and proclaimed to be law by Governor Ducey. ASU will begin to apply it toward the spring 2023 semester.
A qualifying noncitizen student, other than the nonimmigrant aliens described under 8 U.S. Code § 1101(a)(15), are eligible for in-state tuition under Prop. 308, regardless of immigration status, if the student meets both of the following criteria:
- The student attended any public or private high school or homeschool equivalent while physically present in Arizona for at least two years; and
- The student graduated from any public or private high school or homeschool equivalent in Arizona or obtained a high school equivalency diploma in Arizona a, i.e., a GED.
Nonimmigrant aliens described under 8 U.S. C. § 1101(a)(15) are not eligible for in-state tuition under Prop. 308. This includes, but is not limited to, students who hold F1, F2, J1, H4 or H1 visas. For a complete list, please look at 8 U.S. C. § 1101(a)(15).
Nonimmigrant aliens described under 8 U.S. Code § 1101(a)(15) are not eligible for in-state tuition under Prop. 308.
Although international students do not qualify for federal and state financial aid (unless you are an eligible noncitizen), there are still options to help fund your ASU education. ASU’s New American University merit-based scholarship is awarded to a limited number of qualified international undergraduate students who demonstrate high academic achievement.

There are several steps required to accept a Parent PLUS Loan. First you, the student, must give your parent guest access to accept a Parent PLUS Loan. You will receive a validation code and your parent an email with instructions on how to active their guest access. Your parent will need that validation code in order to complete the activation process. You may receive emails or other forms of communication regarding paying your tuition or taking out student loans that will take you to a non-ASU website. Please be aware that these websites are not affiliated with ASU nor the ASU Financial aid and Scholarship Services Office. One example is a site hosted by a company called Simple Tuition, which is completely separate from and has no ties to ASU. The ASU Financial Aid and Scholarship Services Office had no input to the content of this website, and we cannot speak to the accuracy of the data represented. Additionally, Financial Aid and Scholarship Services did not provide ASU email addresses to this company.
As always, we strongly recommend you do your own research into your student loan options and verify all data you find directly with the student loan lenders you are considering. Only the lenders can verify the accuracy of any student loan data that is attributed to them. For more information visit https://tuition.asu.edu/financial-aid/loans.
Yes, all students must complete a FAFSA before they can be awarded a Federal Direct Parent PLUS Loan. Verification of a valid FAFSA on file will be part of the credit evaluation process performed by the lender (i.e., the US Department of Education).
If your parents would like to appeal their Federal Parent PLUS Loan denial, they need to contact Direct Lending Plus Credit Appeals at 1-800-557-7394. Otherwise, the student may request an additional Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan by submitting a Parent PLUS Loan Denial Funds Request form to Financial Aid and Scholarship Services. There are specific limits on the amount of additional unsubsidized loans that may be awarded (i.e., freshmen and sophomores are eligible for an additional $4,000 and juniors and seniors are eligible for an additional $5,000).
Subsidized loans do not accrue interest while you are in school while unsubsidized loans begin accruing interest from the time the loan is fully disbursed (i.e., if you have a fall/spring loan, the loan is fully disbursed once the spring amount is paid to your student account). Both types of student loans do not begin repayment until six months after graduation, you stop going to school or your enrollment drops below half-time status (i.e., 6 credit hours for undergraduate students and 5 credit hours for graduate students). Undergraduate students also are eligible for an interest rate reduction on subsidized loans.
Applicants can reference a traumatic experience without providing details about the perpetrator or location/context of the harassment if they do not want a mandatory reporter to initiate a report.
Mandatory reporters report the disclosed information in order to allow a university representative the opportunity to reach out and provide available resources to the student as well as discuss the availability of available administrative processes related to potential university policy violations.
Information about campus resources including advocacy assistance and confidential counseling and victim-survivor advocacy can be found at https://sexualviolenceprevention.asu.edu/resources.
A student’s private information will only be shared with individuals who need to know the information in order to process the request. The only exception to this relates to mandatory reporting of acts of sexual harassment, which includes sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking. ASU takes all reports of such conduct seriously and is committed to taking appropriate action to hold violators accountable and to prevent any recurrence. In order to ensure all members of our community have access to health and safety resources should an incident occur, all ASU employees are mandatory reporters and must report allegations of sexual harassment, which includes sexual assault, dating/domestic violence and stalking.
