2025-2026 Contributor Social Security Number Verification

If this item is listed under your Financing Tasks in My ASU, your financial aid disbursement will be placed on hold until you provide the information requested.

Why this is needed

The same Social Security number (SSN) was reported for both you and one of your contributors (student’s spouse, parent, or parent’s spouse/partner) on the FAFSA. ASU's Financial Aid and Scholarship Services will need to verify the correct SSN for your contributor in order to continue processing your financial aid file.

Important

Due to the new security around consent and FSA ID (StudentAid.gov account) requirements, limitations have been placed on what corrections ASU can make to your FAFSA. If a correction is needed to your contributor’s social security number, they will need to make the correction themself.

If your contributor does not have a copy, or has lost their Social Security card, they can request a copy from the Social Security Administration (SSA) online at ssa.gov or by calling 1-800-772-1213.

  1. Log in to StudentAid.gov and update your contributor’s information, then re-invite them to your FAFSA form.
  2. Your contributor MUST login to StudentAid.gov and update their information in Account Settings.
  3. Once the Social Security Administration (SSA) verifies their account status, your contributor MUST update the information on your FAFSA form by selecting “Make a Correction.”
  4. They should navigate through the rest of the form, make any other necessary changes, sign, and submit their correction.

If your contributor believes that the SSN reported is correct, they MUST follow the instructions for updating government agencies:

  1. Your contributor MUST contact the SSA by calling 1-800-772-1213 or by visiting ssa.gov.
  2. Once your contributor resolves the issue with SSA, they MUST contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243.
  3. Your contributor MUST ask FSAIC to manually sync their data with SSA. Your contributor will be notified by email once a match is confirmed.
  4. Inform ASU of the update.

Instructions

  1. Have contributor(s) go to StudentAid.gov and make a correction to their social security number.
  2. Wait for a new SAR submission to process. This may take 3-5 days.

You can view your document status on My ASU's Finances tab. Please allow two to three business days after you submit this request for our receipt to show in your Financing Tasks.

Complete and submit online.
