2025-2026 Parent Social Security Number Verification
If this item is listed under your Financing Tasks in My ASU, it is needed to complete your financial aid file, and your financial aid disbursement will be placed on hold.
Why this is needed
The same Social Security number was reported for both of your parents when your FAFSA was completed. ASU's Financial Aid and Scholarship Services will need to verify the correct Social Security numbers for both of your parents in order to continue processing your financial aid file.
Important
Due to the new security around consent and FSA ID (StudentAid.gov account) requirements, limitations have been placed on what corrections ASU can make to your FAFSA. If a correction is needed to your parent’s social security number, they will need to make the correction themself.
If your parent(s) does not have an SSN, they will access the following link:
- Log in to StudentAid.gov and update your parent’s information, then re-invite them to your FAFSA form.
- Your parent MUST login to StudentAid.gov and update their information in Account Settings.
- Once the Social Security Administration (SSA) verifies their account status, your parent(s) MUST update the information on your FAFSA form by selecting “Make a Correction.”
- They should navigate through the rest of the form, make any other necessary changes, sign, and submit their correction.
If your parent(s) believes that the SSN reported is correct, they MUST follow the instructions for updating government agencies:
- Your parent(s) MUST contact the SSA by calling 1-800-772-1213 or by visiting ssa.gov.
- Once your parent(s) resolves the issue with SSA, they MUST contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243.
- Your parent(s) MUST ask FSAIC to manually sync their data with SSA. Your parent(s) will be notified by email once a match is confirmed.
- Inform ASU of the update.
If the name is incorrect, the parent MUST complete the steps to review and correct the name associated with their StudentAid.gov account.
Once the parent has received confirmation of corrections, the student MUST contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) and ask them to manually synchronize their data with SSA.
If corrections are made to the date of birth, SSN, first name, or last name, the record will be sent again for matching.
Instructions
- Have parent(s) go to StudentAid.gov and make a correction to their social security number.
- Wait for a new SAR submission to process. This may take 3-5 days.
