2024-2025 Federal loan discharged due to disability

If this item is listed under your Financing Tasks in My ASU, your financial aid disbursement will be placed on hold until you provide the information requested.

Why this is needed

According to the Federal Student Aid (FSA) website, you have one or more student loan(s) and/or TEACH grant(s) that were discharged due to a total and/or permanent disability. In order for Financial Aid and Scholarship Services to continue processing your financial aid, we need you to clarify whether or not you want additional federal loan(s) and TEACH grant consideration.

Information

Physician’s certification and acknowledgment (All TDD discharge recipients)

If an individual whose prior loan or TEACH Grant service obligation was discharged due to a total and permanent disability later wishes to take out a new Direct Loan or TEACH Grant, they must:

  1. Obtain a certification from a physician (who must be a doctor of medicine or osteopathy licensed to practice in the U.S.) that they have the ability to engage in a substantial gainful activity, and
  2. Acknowledge that the new loan or the TEACH Grant service obligation can’t later be discharged for any present impairment unless it deteriorates so that the individual is again totally and permanently disabled.
