Orphan or Ward of Court Proof

Financial Aid and Scholarship Services will request this documentation only if it is needed to complete your financial aid file. This item holds the awarding and disbursement of financial aid if it is listed on your My Tasks on My ASU.

You indicated one of the following on your FAFSA that when you were age 13 or older:

  1. you were in foster care,
  2. both parents, or both adoptive parents, are deceased or
  3. you are, or were, a ward of the court until age 18.

Instructions

Perform the actions below for the circumstance that best describe you.

Your Circumstance Actions You Must Perform

At age 13 or older, you were in foster care.

You must submit a copy of official court documentation that you are in foster care to Financial Aid and Scholarship Services (include your ASU ID number and each page).

At age 13 or older, both of your parents, or both of your adoptive parents, were deceased.

You must submit copies of both parents', or both adoptive parents', death certificates to Financial Aid and Scholarship Services (include your ASU ID number and each page).

At age 13 or older, you are/were a ward of the court until age 18.

You must submit a copy of official court documentation of your status as a ward of the court to Financial Aid and Scholarship Services (include your ASU ID number and each page).

None of the above apply to you or one of your parents is still living.

  1. You must correct your FAFSA—Question 52 at fafsa.gov.
  2. Provide parental information on your FAFSA.
  3. You and your parent must sign and resubmit your FAFSA electronically. You will receive a new SAR in 4 to 6 weeks. If you do not have your original SAR or cannot access it online, contact the Dept. of Education at 1-800-4FEDAID to request a duplicate.
  4. Once corrections have been process you will need to notify Financial Aid and Scholarship Services that you have made the appropriate corrections.
